How to Choose the Correct Lights for an Outdoor Lighting Installation
Outdoor lights come in a multitude of shapes, sizes, and applications. An outdoor landscape lighting design does not necessarily incorporate only one type of light, so it is wise to understand what each outdoor lighting type is designed to do, and how it fits in with your design. Your final layout could include any of the following light types:
Landscape Lights
Landscape lights are intended to be used in gardens to highlight the most beautiful parts of your garden and features like water fountains, while shading other areas for dramatic effect. These systems are generally low voltage, and are often used in combination with path, spot, and flood lights during an outdoor lighting installation. All outdoor landscape lights should be waterproof.
Post or Pole Lights
Post or pole lights are light fixtures mounted on top of posts or poles that are primarily used to illuminate walkways, patios, and driveways. The height of the posts and their spacing apart depends on the required lighting effect, and must create even balanced lighting for your outdoor lighting installation. Post lights have a higher electrical power rating and are more suited for a 120-volt supply and must be waterproof.
Wall Lights
Wall Lights are suitable for vertical mounting on patios, porches, alleyways and at the side of house and garage doors. Wall lights are intended to illuminate entertainment areas and to add to the ambiance of a home. Most wall lights are generally under cover but should at least have a water-resistant rating for protection from water blown under patio or porch roofs. In other applications, they should have a waterproof rating. Most outdoor lighting installations wall lights use a 120-volt power supply.
Ceiling Lights
Ceiling lights provide additional illumination to entertainment and reception areas not fully covered by wall lights. Ceiling lights can be externally mounted against ceilings or recessed into the ceiling to be less obtrusive. Recessed lighting can be powered by either 12 volts or 120 volts, and lights are sealed, requiring no covers or lenses.
Hanging Lights
Hanging lights like chandeliers, or multi-bulb clusters also provide additional illumination where required but are primarily used to add a feeling of ambiance to reception areas, under patios, or on porches adjacent to the doors to the home. Outdoor hanging lights should be water resistant and be properly protected from corrosion and ingress of insects.
Atlanta Security Lights
Outdoor home lighting installation often requires a security and safety component. Security lighting has a higher specification and higher illumination than standard outdoor landscape lighting. They are installed to illuminate parts of the property that are vulnerable to intruders. Security lights are bright, have a high power demand, and are only required in the event of an undesired incursion. They are activated by motion sensors that are triggered by movement. Security lights utilize 120-volt power sources and must be of an all-weather rating.
